Welcome to Yankee Stadium: Tyler Austin

Unlike the quick ascent of Aaron Judge, the story of Tyler Austin is a much longer and more difficult one.  For baseball players coming into the majors together at almost the same age, their routes are ones of big differences.  Both were drafted out of high school both Judge decided to go the college route where Austin went right to the Yankees.

Speaking of the draft, Austin was taken in the 13th round of the 2010 out of Heritage High School in Conyers, GA.  In 2010 he also got into his first taste of professional action, playing in 2 games for the Yankees GCL (Rookie League) squad.  In those two games he got only 2 at bats and had no hits.

As is no surprise for a player being drafted out of high school, Austin, started his first full season (2011) in the Rookie League (Gulf Coast League).  His career started out hot as in 20 games he hit .390 with 8 doubles, 3 HRs, 13 runs and 22 RBIs.  With that great started he was called up to Staten Island.  He did deal with some injury issues this season and therefore only played 27 more games that season.  In those games he hit .323 with 10 doubles, 3 HRs, 16 runs and 14 RBIs.

The 2012 season was another hot one for Austin, but injuries continued to play a role in his young career.  He started the season with a promotion to Charleston where he would play 70 games in 2012.  There he hit .320 with 22 doubles, 14 HRs, 69 runs and 54 RBIs.  During this time in Charleston he did spend 8 days on the disabled list.  In early July, Austin was moved up to the Tampa Yankees (Advanced A).  He would play 36 games in Tampa that season but again spent some time on the DL, this time for 19 days, which included a rehab assignment in the GCL (In his 2 game rehab assignment he hit .500 with a HR, a run and a 2 RBIs).  In Tampa he hit .321 with 13 doubles, 2 HRs, 20 runs and 23 RBIs.  This earned him an end of the season call up to Trenton.  In only 2 games in Trenton he hit .286 with 2 runs and 1 RBI.

With the big movement from the year before, Austin became a known prospect in the Yankees system.  He was ranked as a top 80 prospect overall by both Baseball America and MLB.com.  He spent the entire 2013 season in Trenton (except again for a rehab assignment as injuries continue to pop up for Austin).  In 83 games he hit .257 with 17 doubles, 6 HRs, 43 runs and 40 RBIs.  This season he spent over a month on the DL and did play another rehab assignment in the GCL.  There he played 2 games hitting .667 with a run.

In 2014, Austin started his season at big league Spring Training.  However, he did not make the big league team and after a mediocre 2013 season he was sent to another full season at Trenton.  This season he play 105 games while hitting .275 with 20 doubles, 9 HRs, 56 runs and 47 RBIs.  However, as is becoming a trend, 2014 was another season with a DL stint.

Since his fast accent in 2012, Austin, had not been able to break out of Trenton.  However, 2015 would be the year where he broke through.  He started the season at AAA with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.  He played 73 games there hitting a disappointing .235 with 8 doubles, 4 HRs, 33 runs and 27 RBIs.  During his time in AAA he had not one but two stints on the DL and in early August was sent back down to Trenton.   He finished his season in Trenton and played 21 games there hitting .260 with 5 doubles, 2 HRs, 8 runs and 8 RBIs.

After the 2015 season, Austin was no longer seen as a top prospect for the Yankees.  Even much so that he was designated for assignment after the season and spent the fall in the Arizona Fall League to try to get him back on track.  This move seemed to work as he has had a turnaround season this year. For the 3rd time in his career he started the season in Trenton.  He spent 50 games there hitting .260 with 10 doubles, 4 HRs, 22 runs and 29 RBIs.  He then was promoted back to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and since the promotion has been on a tear.  In 57 games at AAA he hit .323 with 24 doubles, 13 HRs, 39 runs and 49 RBIs.  This was also the first season he did not spend any time on the DL and it all came together for him to get the call up to the major leagues.

As mentioned in the start, Austin's trip to the majors was not an easy and quick trip.  He had some up and down seasons with many DL trips.  However, this season he has really seen his star rise again as he tore up AAA causing the Yankees to bring him up for the stretch run this year.

As I spoke of in the article about Aaron Judge, Austin is the other obvious call up at the end of this season.  However, with the youth movement going on in the Bronx we could certainly see quite a number of young players be called up once rosters expand in September.

Welcome to Yankee Stadium: Aaron Judge

As should have been a surprise to nobody reading this blog, Aaron Judge, was called up to the major league squad.  The 3 HRs he hit in the last 5 games gave the Yankees no excuse for not calling him up after Alex Rodriguez's final game.  Judge was called up with Tyler Austin (who has his own post forthcoming) and they even hit back to back HRs in their big league debut.

Aaron Judge was drafted by the Yankees in the 1st round (32nd pick) or the 2013 draft out of Cal State-Fresno.  This was not his first time being drafted as he was picked in the 31st round in 2010 by the A's but did not sign.

His professional career began in 2014 in Charleston (A - Full Season) where over 65 games he hit .333 with 15 doubles, 9 HRs, 36 runs and 45 RBIs.  This earned him a promotion to Tampa where he played his remaining 66 games of the season.  There he hit .283 with 9 doubles, 8 HRs, 44 runs and 33 RBIs.

Going into the 2015 season Judge was considered a top 70 prospect by Baseball America, MLB.com and Baseball Prospectus.  On top of these accolades he was also promoted to start the season in Trenton.  That season he played 63 games in Trenton hitting .284 with 16 doubles, 12 HRs, 36 runs and 44 RBIs.  He was again promoted mid-season as he was on a fast track to the majors as one of the top prospects.  However, his first try at AAA in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre didn't go as he had hoped.  In 61 games he hit .224 with 10 doubles, 8 HRs, 27 runs and 28 RBIs.

After an up and down 2015 campaign he was still considered a top prospect around baseball.  Even as high as being Baseball Prospectus' 18th overall prospect.  This year, before his call up, he had spent the whole season at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.  Although he did suffer a minor injury during the season he was able to play 93 games.  There he hit .270 with a 18 doubles, 19 HRs, 62 runs and 65 RBIs.

Since being a first round draft pick Aaron has been on the radar and has as mentioned above was a top prospect over the last couple season.  Here were his exact overall rankings:
Prospect Ratings by Baseball America:
Pre-2015: Rated #53 Prospect
Pre-2016: Rated #76 Prospect
Prospect Ratings by MLB.com:
Pre-2015: Rated #68 Prospect
Pre-2016: Rated #31 Prospect
Prospect Ratings by BaseballProspectus.com:
Pre-2015: Rated #49 Prospect
Pre-2016: Rated #18 Prospect

In terms of top Yankees prospects he has also been up there over the last few years.  These are all according to Baseball America.  In 2014 they had him at #6, moved up to #2 in 2015 and then started this season at #3.

With Gary Sanchez, Aaron Judge and Tyler Austin being called up it will be interesting to see who gets the call on September 1st.  These three prospects have been identified as the top MLB ready talent the Yankees have.  However, I wouldn't be surprised to see the likes of Clint Frazier. Ben Gamel, or Jake Cave come up when the rosters expand.

Welcome to Yankee Stadium: Gary Sanchez

With the new youth movement going down in the Bronx, the dominoes have started to fall in terms of prospects getting the call.  In a move that people have been waiting more than half a decade for, Gary Sanchez has been promoted to the major league club.  This is not his first promotion to the Bronx but hopefully this one will finally bring some impact.

Sanchez was originally a high priced ($3 million) international signing out of the Dominican Republic in July of 2009.  As will happen when that kind of money is spent on a prospect, fans have been following Sanchez's career from the beginning.  Even before he played a single game he was listed as the Yankees #7 prospect here.

In his first season of professional ball, 2010, he started the season in the Gulf Coast League.  However, he only lasted 31 games because he hit .353 with 11 doubles, 6 homers, 25 runs and 36 RBIs.  This earned him a promotion to the Staten Island Yankees.  He played his remaining 16 games that season in Staten Island.  There his numbers were not as impressive as he hit .278 with 2 doubles, 2 homers, 8 runs and 7 RBIs.  After this season his ranking as a prospect went up and Baseball America had him behind only Jesus Montero as the #2 Yankees prospect.

The 2011 season started with a promotion to the Charleston RiverDogs.  He spent his entire 82 game season in Charleston and hit .256 with 16 doubles, 17 homers, 49 runs and 52 RBIs.  After this season his star fell a little in the rankings.  The hot play by Manny Banuelos and Dellin Betances dropped Sanchez to 4th on Baseball America's list.

In 2012 Sanchez again started in Charleston after the lackluster 2011 showing.  However, this round went much better for him as he only played 68 games at Charleston that season hitting .297 with 19 doubles, 13 homers, 44 runs and 56 RBIs.  Midway through the season he was promoted to the Tampa Yankees.  There he again took some time to adjust and hit .279 with 10 doubles, 5 homers, 21 runs and 29 RBIs in 48 games.  After this season there was quite the shakeup in the Baseball America rankings and he moved up to 3rd but his time behind Mason Williams and Slate Heathcott.

For the second year in a row Sanchez started where he had ended the year before, starting 2013 again in Tampa.  But as it was the year before he didn't make it through a full season.  He played 94 games in Tampa hitting .254 with 21 doubles, 13 homers, 38 runs and 61 RBIs.  He was then promoted to the Trenton Thunder.  In Trenton, Sanchez hit .250 with 6 doubles, 2 homers, 12 runs and 10 RBIs in the final 23 games.  With his movement up to Double A, Gary Sanchez finally became the Yankees top prospect for this season.

The next year, 2014, started much like the last two, in the same place it ended.  However, this season would see Sanchez spend his entire 110 games in Trenton.  There he would hit .270 with 19 doubles, 13 homers, 48 runs and 65 RBIs.  With an influx of new talent in the minors that year, Sanchez dropped to only the #5 prospect this year.

At the start of the next year, Sanchez, was still in Trenton.  But in 2015 he only spent 58 games there, hitting .262 with 14 doubles, 12 homers, 33 runs and 36 RBIs.  He was then promoted to his final minor league stop with the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders.  There he played 35 games and hit .295 with 9 doubles, 6 homers, 17 runs and 26 RBIs.  At the end of this season he was promoted to the big league club but only got 2 at bats and no hits.  With his move up to Triple A and a brief major league stint, Sanchez this season moved back up to the #2 prospect in the system.

This season he started back in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and has play all but 1 game at this level so far this year.  He was called up earlier in the year to the big league team but only played 1 game and was hit less in 4 at bats.  In the minors this year he hit .285 with 21 doubles, 10 homers, 39 runs and 50 RBIs.

Gary Sanchez has always been a big name Yankees prospect since he was signed.  Below is a good chart to see his ranking journey as a prospect overall in the minors from Baseball America.
Prospect Ratings by Baseball America:
Pre-2011: Rated #30 Prospect
Pre-2012: Rated #81 Prospect
Pre-2013: Rated #57 Prospect
Pre-2014: Rated #35 Prospect
Pre-2016: Rated #36 Prospect

As I mentioned above this should not be the first big time prospect to be called up shortly by the Yankees.  With the trade of Carlos Betran I would not be surprised to see a outfielder, potentially Aaron Judge, get the call in the upcoming weeks or maybe even days.
