ESPN's Top signed picks 2011

ESPN Insider did a write up about the top signed players at every position and the top unsigned.  If you have ESPN insider the link is here.

There was a Yankees on the list for signed players.  That was first compensation round pick Dante Bichette Jr.  They had this to say:

Third base: Dante Bichette Jr., New York Yankees
The Yankees' top pick in June, Bichette signed quickly for a slightly above-slot bonus of $750,000, and he's been amongst the most impressive bats in the rookie-level Gulf Coast League, hitting .329/.446/.507 in 37 games while showing excellent plate discipline and the potential to hit for power.
His ability to stay at the hot corner is an open debate, but the spitting image of his father should have enough hitting skills to still be a prospect as a corner outfielder.
It is nice to see Bichette recognized.  After a slow start he has really had a great season for the GCL Yankees.  With the stat line seen above he has shown so far to be worth the 51st overall pick the Yankees spent on him.

Rafael Soriano Signing Compensation

Brian Cashman was very ambivalent to sign Rafael Soriano for two reasons.  First he did not want to give a big contract to a reliever and he would give up the Yankees first round pick since Soriano was a Type A free agent. This post will then look at the players that were taken in the compensation picks.  Now the 38 pick the Yankees would never have had but it was still received by the Rays for the signing so I will go into detail about him.  Now in looking up what picks the Yankees got there is some dispute over which Rays compensation pick was from the Yankees but more sites said it was Brandon Martin so I'm going to go with the majority.

31. Mike Mahtook - LSU
In 2009, as a freshman at LSU Mahtook "played in 63 games (49 starts), batting .316 (62-for-196) with eight doubles, three triples, seven homers, 38 RBI, 41 runs and nine steals."

During his sophomore year, 2010, "started 61 games in right field, batting .335 (80-for-239) with 19 doubles, four triples, 14 homers, 50 RBI, 68 runs and 22 stolen bases."

In those two years he won these awards:
2010 SEC All-Tournament Team
2010 First-Team All-Louisiana
2009 SEC Tournament Most Valuable Player
2009 SEC All-Tournament Team
2009 SEC All-Freshman Team
2009 Second-Team All-Louisiana

As a senior this past year he started all 56 games he played in.  He hit .383 with 12 doubles, 14 home runs, 61 runs, 56 RBIs, and 29 stolen bases.  After this season he was named a first-team All-American by American Baseball Coaches Association and Baseball America's magazine.  He was also on the 2011 SEC All-Defensive team.

Mahtook has yet to sign with the Rays.

38. Brandon Martin - SS - Santana HS in Corona, California
As a junior, Martin had batted .300 with five home runs and seven stolen bases for Corona Santiago High School. He was one of 13 signees that coach Pat Casey and Oregon State had inked for the upcoming season.

Martin is in the Golf Coast League for the Rays.  In 15 games he has hit .250 with a double, a home run, 6 runs, and 3 RBIs.
