Welcome to Yankee Stadium: Brandon Laird

Brandon Laird was called up by the Yankees on Tuesday.  Link is here.

Laird was first drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the 27th round of the 2005 MLB draft but didn't sign.  He was then again drafted in the 27th round of the 2007 MLB draft but this time by the Yankees.  He is the younger brother of Gerald Laird who has played for the Rangers and Tigers.

He spent the 2007 season in the Gulf Coast League.  In 45 games he hit .339 with 8 HRs, 27 runs, and 29 RBIs.

For the 2008 season he was promoted to the Charleston RiverDogs (Low A).  That season he played 122 games, hitting .273 with 23 HRs, 71 run, and 86 RBIs. This is where his power really started to show.

After 2008, he was promoted again, he spent the entire 2009 season with the Tampa Yankees (High A).  In 124 games there he hit .266 with 13 HRs, 53 runs, and 75 RBIs.  This season had a little bit of a regression but still solid power numbers for that level.

In 2010 he played in Trenton (AA) for most of the season and got called up to Scranton/Wilkes Barre (AAA) for the end of the season.  In 107 games in Trenton, he hit .291 with 23 HRs, 86 runs, and 102 RBIs.  After being promoted he played 31 games in Scranton/Wilkes Barre and hit .246 with 2 HRs, 13 runs, and 12 RBIs.  Overall a very good season that really put Laird on the map as a legitimate Yankee prospect.  25 home runs is a lot for a minor leaguer to hit in 138 games.

Laird started the 2011 season at Scranton/Wilkes Barre (AAA).  In 90 games this season he has hit .266 with 10 HRs, 37 runs, and 49 RBIs.

With the injury to Alex Rodriguez and then Ramiro Pena, Laird has been called up to be the backup third-baseman behind Eduardo Nunez
