Prospect Update July 9th

Scranton/Wilkes Barre Yankees had a double header against the Rochester Red Wings.  They won the first game 9-0 and the second one 6-4.
Jorge Vazquez went 1 for 2 with 2 runs in game one and 1 for 2 with a double, a run, and 2 RBIs.  Brandon Laird went 2 for 3 with a double, a run, and 3 RBIs in game one and 1 for 3 with a HR, run, and 2 RBIs in game two.

DJ Mitchell pitched 7 scoreless innings with 5 strikeouts to get the win in game one.


Trenton Thunder 4-6 loss to the Reading Phillies
Robert Lyerly went 1 for 4 with a double and a run.

Shaeffer Hall went 5 innings, giving up 3 runs and striking out 3.


Tampa Yankees had a double header against the St. Lucie Mets.  They won the first game 3-1 and lost the second 5-6 in 12 innings.
Zoilo Almonte went 1 for 3 with a run in game one and 2 for 6 with a RBI in game two..  JR Murphy went 2 for 4 with 2 doubles and a RBI in game one and 1 for 5 in game two.

Game one starter Brett Marshall went 5 innings, giving up only 1 run while striking out 6.

Cito Culver went 0 for 4.  Mason Williams went 0 for 4.  Angelo Gumbs went 2 for 4 with a triple and a run.


GCL Yankees had a double header to make up for yesterdays suspended game.  They lost the first 4-9 and the second 1-3.
Dante Bichette Jr. went 1 for 3 with a double in game one and 0 for 2 in game two.  David Adams went 1 for 2 with an RBI in game one

Prospect Update July 8th

Today was a rainy day and only two of the Yankees farm teams got through a full game.
Scranton/Wilkes Barre Yankees were postponed

Trenton Thunder 1-6 loss to the Reading Phillies
Austin Romine went 1 for 4. Robert Lyerly went 1 for 4.  Corban Joseph went 2 for 4 with a double.

Starter Manny Banuelos had a mediocure outing, going 5 innings, giving up 5 runs, 4 earned, and striking out 3.


Tampa Yankees were postponed

Charleston RiverDogs 5-6 loss to the Delmarva Shorebirds
Gary Sanchez had a big day, going 2 for 3 with a HR, 2 runs, and a RBI.  Ramon Flores also had a nice day, going 2 for 5 with a HR, a double, a run, and 2 RBIs.


Staten Island Yankees were postponed

GCL Yankees were suspended after 3 innings.

I will not be doing a 2011 Draftee Update tonight because none of the draftees played with all of the rainouts.

Staten Island:
Zach Wilson went 1 for 4 with a run, a walk, and a strikeout.
Matt Tracy pitched 3 scoreless innings, giving up 3 hits and 2 walks while striking out 1.
Philip Wetherell pitched 1 scoreless inning.

GCL Yankees:
Justin James went 0 for 2 with a strikeout.

Prospect Update July 7th

Jorge Vazquez had a big day going 2 for 4 with a HR, a double, 2 runs, and 2 RBIs.  Brandon Laird went 1 for 4 with a double, a run, and a RBI.

Ivan Nova made his first start since being sent down, he went 7.2 innings, giving up only 2 runs while striking out 10.


Trenton Thunder played a double header to make up for yesterday's rainout.  They lost the first 2-3 and the second 1-2
Austin Romine went 0 for 3 in the first game.  Robert Lyerly went 0 for 3 in both games.

Dellin Betances had a very nice pitching performance in game one, he went 6 innings and only gave up 2 run while striking out 9.

Jesus Montero on the 7 day DL

Retroactive to the 4th of July, Jesus Montero has been place on the DL.  The reason given was back stiffness.  I had been wondering why he had not been in the lineup the last few days and this would be the reason. Link here.

Robert Paullus pitched 2 scoreless innings, giving up 1 hit and striking out 3.
Zach Arneson went .1 innings, giving up a solo HR and striking out 1.

Trenton Thunder played a double header to make up for the suspended game yesterday against the Richmond Flying Squirrels.  They lost the first 1-5 and the second 6-9.
Austin Romine went 0 for 3 in game one.  Robert Lyerly went 1 for 3 in the second game.  Corban Joseph went 0 for 4 in the first game and 4 for 4 with a HR, 2 runs, and 2 RBIs in the second.

Yankees Sign Justin James

The Yankees have come to a contract agreement with 13th round pick, left fielder, Justin James.  The interesting part about James is that he gave up baseball during his senior year of high school to focus on basketball.  He then rediscovered baseball in college when his basketball skills were not panning out and had a great 2011 season.  He is thought to have many tools but is very raw.  This leads me to the conclusion that he will be sent to the Golf Coast League.  However, since he went to college he has a chance of going to Staten Island but I wouldn't count on it.  Info on his and Stafford signing here.
