2011 Draftees List with Signees

In making sure that I did not miss anyone in my 2011 Draftee Update I ran across a list from Baseball America that lists all of the Yankees draftees and has all of the ones that have signed in bold.  It looks like I have not missed anyone and the Yankees have only signed a small number of their picks.  This list will hopefully be updated over the year so we will be able to see who has signed.  The link is here

I want to thank REDWHITEANDBLUEUSA for posting this scouting report:
"Saw this kid tonight in Aberdeen Maryland playing the IronBirds. Struck out the side. Fastball consistently in the zone.. Threw 3 balls... everything else was a strike. His slider drops like a rock about 2 feet in front of the plate. Throws that between 88 and 91. Impressed"

Ones that Got Away: Eric Milton

Previous Segments: Jose TabataIan KennedyAustin JacksonRoss Ohledorf, Gerrit Cole, and Mike Lowell
In these segments I will detail former Yankee prospects who were traded and have since become successful players for other teams.  The seventh in this series will be Eric Milton
Trade to the Minnesota Twins with Brian Buchanan, Christian Guzman, Danny Mota, and cash for Chuck Knoblauch

Background:  Milton drafted in the first round of the 1996 MLB draft, 20th overall, by the Yankees.  Milton only played one season in the minor leagues.  He spent the 1997 season starting in high A ball and making it all the way up to AA.  His combined stats for the season was a 14-6 record with a 3.11 ERA.  He also struck out 162 in 171 innings.  He was then ranked as the #25 overall prospect by Baseball America going into the 2008 season.  Following the 1997 season he was traded to the Twin.

Since being trade: While Milton did not have a hugely successful career he was a very serviceable pitcher and lasted 11 season in the big leagues.   He had his best season in 2001 in which he went 15-7 with a 4.32 ERA.  He also struck out 157 in 220.2 innings.  This season was his one and only All-Star appearance.  His career numbers aren't overly inspiring, he was 89-85 with a 5.11 ERA.

Comments on trade: This trade seems like a very good one for the Yankees.  Even though they gave up two serviceable MLB players in Milton and Christian Guzman, Knoblauch was a staple on the late nineties championship teams.  He was a great leadoff man and added speed to the Yankees lineup.  Therefore it was definitely worth giving as much as the Yankees did.

Staten Island Yankees Roster Update

Since opening day Cody Grice the 12th round pick has been put on the roster.  He is an outfielder and has played in one game so far.

I also found a link about the SI Yankees roster that had 21st round pick Zach Wilson as being one of the 2011 draftees on the roster.  However, his name doesn't show up on the SI Yankees site as being on the roster so this is yet to be confirmed.  The link is here.

GCL Yankees Roster

Today, June 20th is the opening day for the GCL Yankees.  Due to the fact that many draftees will usually end up in the Golf Coast League I am going to go through their roster and point out all of this years draftees that are with the team, which would mean they signed and any other interesting prospects on this team.

Infielders:
David Adams-2008 3rd round pick on a rehab assignment- appears on some top Yankee's prospect lists
Dante Bichette Jr.- 1st round pick

The fact that Bichette is the only draftee on this roster seems unusual.  One reason for this could be that it is usually high school prospects that are sent here.  These prospects have more on their plates in terms of graduating from high school, deciding between pro baseball and college baseball, and negotiating their contract.  This could mean that it takes longer to get these kids signed and therefore they are still in negotiations and not on the ball field.
