Yankees Sign Dante Bichette Jr.

The Yankees have come to an agreement with 1st compensatory round (51 overall) pick Dante Bichette Jr.  The Yankees.com article can be found here.

He has been sent to the Gulf Coast League's (GCL) Yankees team.  This is a team that play in a stadium without fans and is where most drafted high school players are sent.  Hopefully he will perform well there and then get called up to Staten Island to finish out the year.  The GCL regular season starts on Monday and I will do a rundown of their roster then to see which draft picks ended up there.

Staten Island Yankees Roster

Today, June 17th is opening day for the Staten Island Yankees.  Due to this I am going to update the draft picks that have landed at Staten Island since this is the level many of the draft picks are sent to.  This would also seem to mean that the Yankees have signed these players.  This also means that the SI Yankees will now be in my daily prospect updates.

Pitchers:
Zach Arneson- 9th round
Corey Maines- 23rd round
Mark Montgomery- 11th round
Robert Paullus- 19th round
Branden Pinder- 16th round
Matthew Tracy- 24th round
Philip Wetherell- 8th round

INF:
Cito Culver SS- 2010 1st round pick
Angelo Gumbs SS- 2010 2nd round pick

It looks like for their opening day it will only be pitchers from this years draft that make the roster.  This may however change as new members are signed.  I was an intern in the New York-Penn League (the Staten Island Yankees league) and can tell you from experience that the Class A short-season rosters change quite a bit over the season.

MLB Debut Tracker

I'm not sure how I have never seen this before but I thought I would enlighten all of you as well if you haven't seen this before.  ESPN has a tracker for MLB players making their MLB debut going back all the way to 2002.  Its some very interesting stuff to look at.  They also have some other cool stats on other tabs but this was the one that I found most interesting.  Of course the only Yankee that has been called up this month was Kevin Whalen, which it shows.  The link is http://espn.go.com/mlb/debuts

ESPN recap:
The Yankees added Dante Bichette, whose father of the same name played in the big leagues. He has good makeup and is a future outfielder with a strong arm and some power potential. The hit tool is a question, however.

Saber by the Bay:
LosersNew York Yankees
The Yankees didn’t pick until late in the sandwich round, at 51, and when they did, it wasn’t all that impressive. With his first pick, Brian Cashman tabbed Dante Bichette Jr., who will live up to the “Bronx Bombers” moniker by hitting for a ton of power, but probably will do little else. A third baseman, Bichette Jr.’s glove is unimpressive, and he almost certainly won’t put up the kind of on-base numbers his father did. Though Jr.’s pop is impressive, it wasn’t enough to land him in Baseball America or Keith Law’s top 100 draft prospects. For a team that has the money to bust slot to get game-changing talent, he doesn’t profile to be a difference-maker.
