Ravel Santana

As promised I am doing bios on the top listed players in the GCL.  Ravel Santana was listed as the #2 player.

Santana is a 19 year old from San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic.  He was signed as a non-drafted free agent in 2008.

His first two seasons in the Yankees system were spent in the Dominican Summer League (DSL).  In 2009 he played for both the DSL 1 and DSL 2 team.  He combined to hit .234 with 5 HR, 8 doubles, 31 runs, and 28 RBIs in 50 games.

During the 2010 season he spent the entire season on the DSL 2 team.  There he hit an impressive .322 with 10 HRs, 10 doubles, 46 runs and 38 RBIs in 63 games.

This season he got called up to the GCL where he played the entire season.  He hit .296 with 9 HRs, 11 doubles, 42 runs, and 29 RBIs in 41 games.  He was 14th in the GCL in average behind five of his Yankee teammates.  He was also 5th in HRs, 15th in RBIs. 3rd in runs, and T-12th in doubles.

These rankings show that he is a pretty complete player and being only 19 gives him a lot of time to develop. If he continues to show he can play against better and better competition, which we hope he does, it will still be at least 3 years until he gets even close to the majors.  However, he is a good player to keep an eye on over the next few seasons.
