Yankees Draft: 49th Round - Tyler Mapes RHP

Mapes is out of his sophomore year at  Navarro College.  Navarro is a junior college.  He played his high school baseball at Newman Smith High School in Texas.

During his sophomore year Navarro he was selected as the Region XIV East Zone Pitcher of the Year.  He went 10-2 with a 1.37 ERA.  He also struck out 90 in 91.2 innings.

EDIT: Just found out that he is committed to play at Tulane next season and that he played his freshman year at Navy.

Navy lists his high school accomplishments as:
• Attended Newman Smith High School, where he earned three letters in baseball and also played quarterback with the football team
• Unanimous first-team all-district selection during both his junior and senior years
• As a senior, he went 6-3 with a 1.54 ERA in 68.0 innings with 71 strikeouts and only 14 walks
• During his junior season, he had three wins and two saves with a 3.48 ERA in 64.1 innings with only 59 hits allowed
• Offensively, he tied for the second-highest batting average in school history with a .500 (27-for-54) mark in 2008
• Batted .353 (30-for-85) with 26 RBIs during his senior season
• Helped the team to a bi-district title as a senior with a 22-7 record
• Named to the academic all-state team in 2009
• Teammate of fellow Navy baseball member Ryan Lamb
• Member of the National Honor Society



His freshman year at Navy he went 3-2 with a 3.41 ERA.   He had 15 strikeouts in 31.2 innings.
