Yankees Draft: 28th Round - Josean Lazaro RHP

Lazaro is out of North Broward Prep High School in Florida.  However, he only played there his senior year.  For the first three seasons he played at Perkiomen School in Pennsylvania.  He is committed to play at Villanova University next season.

Lazaro had a pretty impressive high school career on both the mound and at the plate.  However, since it seems the Yankees have drafted him as a pitcher I will only list those stats.  For all his info you can go to his website that lists much information on him here.

As a freshman in 2008, he went 5-2 with a 2.97 ERA.  He struck out 36 in 36.1 innings.  During that season his velocity was measured at 80 mph.

In 2009, he went 2-3 but improved his ERA to 2.40.  He also struck out 39 in 33.2 innings.  That season he was clocked up to 88 mph.   He also attended a Perfect Game USA event and the scouting report read:

Jose Lazaro is a 2011 RHP/OF/3B with a 5'10'', 170 lb. frame from Pennsburg, PA who attends Perkiomen School. Lazaro has an athletic build, uses a 3/4 arm slot short arm action, good arm speed, very little effort, some arm side run, 11-5 curve ball with good bite, good pick off to first, fastball has good downward plane, solid command, easy motion. Defensively, on line throws, shows arm strength and arm speed, good upside. He is also a good student.

During his junior year he went 2-0 but his ERA rose to 3.23.  However, his strikeout rate went way up.  He struck out 61 in 39 innings.  His velocity was measured at 90 mph.

His senior year he put it all together.  He went 7-0 with a 2.52 ERA.  He also struck out 101 in 58.1 innings. He was clocked at 93 mph.  He was selected as preseason All-American High Honorable Mention by Perfect Game USA.
