Yankees Draft: 23rd Round - Corey Maines RHP


Maines is out of Illinois State University.  He played high school ball in Houston, Texas at Langham Creek High School.  There he had many accomplishments including batting .429 with nine home runs and 42 RBI as a senior and also swiped 16 bases.  He garnered third-team all-state and first-team all-Houston honors in both the Houston Chronicle and HSA Baseball for his performance as a senior. He 9-3 on the mound with a 1.01 ERA and 84 strikeouts in 74.0 innings of work and named MVP of the District 5A Championship. He pitched in the Houston All-Star Game and helped his team to the regional semi-finals with a 34-4 record.  His team was ranked No. 2 in USA Today and No. 11 in Baseball America and he batted .311 with five home runs and 32 RBI as a junior, and went 7-1 with a 2.30 ERA while fanning 88 batters in 61.0 innings pitched according to the Illinois St. Website.

In his freshman year, 2008 he wasn't very succesful, going 3-5 with a 7.59 ERA.  He struck out 26 in 40.1 innings and 7 starts in 11 appearances.  He was also selected as the MVC player of the Week once.  

He was better as a sophomore in 2009.  That year he went 6-5 with a 4.26 ERA.  He had 69 strikeouts in 86.2 innings.  That season he made 14 appearances all of which were starts.  

His junior year in 2010, he regressed slightly.  He went 6-3 with a 4.60 ERA.  He struck out 67 in 86 innings.  He made 17 starts including 2 complete games and 1 shutout.  

In 2011, his senior season he finally put it all together.  This year he went 9-4 with a 2.87 ERA.  He had a career high 110 strikeouts in 94 innings while making 15 starts.  This season he also won the MVC Player of the Week award once and was an Honorable Mention for the All-MVC team.
