Yankees Draft: 20th Round - Daniel Camarena LHP

B/T: L/L

Camerena is out of Catholic Central High School in California.  He has signed a letter of intent to the University of San Diego.

During his sophomore season he went 3-1 with 2 saves.  He also had a great 1.60 ERA.  He struck out 36 in 30.2 innings.  He was also a very good hitter with a .370 average but the Yankees took him as a pitcher so I will focus on those statistics.

His junior year he made 14 appearances, 11 starts, and had an 8-1 record with a save.  His ERA climbed just a tad to 1.74 which is still great.  He also struck out 73 in 68.1 innings.  On the offensive side he hit .312 with 27 runs.

This past season, his senior, he was amazing.  He lowered his ERA over a full point to an insane 0.53 in 12 appearances, 11 starts.  His final record was 9-1 with 6 complete games and 4 shutouts.  He also struck out 90 in 66.1 innings, which is truly dominant.  He was ranked by MaxPreps as the #6 player in California and the #23 prep player in the nation.

A scouting report from Perfect Game USA during a 2010 national showcase said this:
Daniel Camarena is a 2011 1B/OF/LHP with a 6-1 200 lb. frame from Bonita, CA who attends Cathedral Catholic HS. Strong mature build. Top level 2-way prospect. Has been primary LHP but may have higher ceiling as a hitter. 6.92 runner, open to straight hitting stance, well balanced, aggressive hitter, very strong and quick hands, pull approach with plus power potential. Smooth defensive actions at 1B, can also play outfield. Full back turn delivery on the mound, lands a bit closed, extended smooth arm action, varies FB velocity/movement/location, tops at 91 mph and will sink it at 83-84 as well, pitches off a big curveball with plus command, very nice feel for a change up. Good student, verbal commitment to San Diego. Selected for the Aflac All-American team.

Perfect Game USA also noted:

MVP of WWBA Jupiter, Outsanding Pitchability, seen up to 91 mph, very good bat and OF as well

This is the last prospect I'm going to do a bio on tonight.  I will get to all 50 rounds but it may take a few days.
