Yankees Draft: 11th Round - Mark Montgomery RHP

H: 5'11"
W: 205
B/T: R/R

Montgomery was drafted out of Longwood University after his junior season.

He attended Bruton High School where he got many awards.  From his Longview profile it lists:
All-State, All-Region, All-District, and team MVP as a senior.  Virginia Gazette newspaper Player of the Year and All-Daily Press newspaper team.  He hit .419 with one home run and 12 RBI; while on the mound, he posted a school-record 107 strikeouts over 60 innings with a 2.03 ERA.  All-District as a junior.  All-District and Best Defensive as a sophomore.  He also participated in basketball as well as track and field.

During his freshman year he went 3-5 with a  5.57 ERA.  He also struck out 64 in  63 innings.  Went back and forth from reliever to starter, making 3 starts in 20 appearances.

During his sophomore year he was much improved.  He was 3-1 with a 3.09 ERA.  This season he stuck to a relief role and was the teams closer.  He struck out 45 in 35 innings, while making a team high 22 appearances.  He also lead his team with 6 saves.   He was named the Coastal Plain League's 8th best prospect by Baseball America.

Before his junior season his coach described him as:
“Mark already has established himself as the finest closer in Longwood Baseball history. His 94 MPH fastball and near-unhittable slider have him poised to seal virtually any W for his team when given the horsehide near the end of a game with any sort of lead. Mark is a pure gladiator when he enters the arena. He reminds me of the great St. Louis Cardinal pitcher, Bob Gibson— fearless, frightening and totally
dominating.”

His junior season was a truly great one.  He went 1-0 with an amazing 0.89 ERA in again a team leading 22 appearances.  This season he struck out 48 in only 30.1 innings.  He recorded 10 of the teams 12 saves for the season.  His number of saves and ERA are both Longwood records.

  1. Saw this kid tonight in Aberdeen Maryland playing the IronBirds. Struck out the side. Fastball consistently in the zone.. Threw 3 balls... everything else was a strike. His slider drops like a rock about 2 feet in front of the plate. Throws that between 88 and 91. Impressed
